Eclogues

Virgil

Vergil. The Poems of Vergil. Rhoades, James, translator. London: Oxford University Press, 1921.

  1. Ever hath Maenalus his murmuring groves
  2. and whispering pines, and ever hears the songs
  3. of love-lorn shepherds, and of Pan, who first
  4. brooked not the tuneful reed should idle lie.
  5. Nysa to Mopsus given! what may not then
  6. we lovers look for? soon shall we see mate
  7. griffins with mares, and in the coming age
  8. shy deer and hounds together come to drink.
  9. Now, Mopsus, cut new torches, for they bring
  10. your bride along; now, bridegroom, scatter nuts:
  11. forsaking Oeta mounts the evening star!
  12. O worthy of thy mate, while all men else
  13. thou scornest, and with loathing dost behold
  14. my shepherd's pipe, my goats, my shaggy brow,
  15. and untrimmed beard, nor deem'st that any god
  16. for mortal doings hath regard or care.
